I'm a vegetarian and am enjoying food much more now than I did a few years ago. I love to cook! Especially when I've got someone to cook for. I used to have bad habits. I would overindulge as a carnivore and sugar addict. Long gone are the days where I would throw back a V drink and a caramel tart (with custard in the centre, cream and drizzled chocolate on top) to cure my 3:30pm blonde moments. Nowadays it's a cup of tea with no sugar and no milk. I'm trying to integrate the vegan approach for a couple of weeks to see how I feel.
I've been inspired by 2 friends of mine who have recently gone to LA to expand their acting careers (which I wish them all the luck in the world for and miss them dearly). One of them has already reported the good LA eating lifestyle secrets. He suggested I watch the doco Forks Over Knives. So I watched the trailer for it (see it here). It's an expose on the bad eating habits of American's who end up with coronary problems, cancer and diabetes. A woman in it reports how she reversed her diabetes. I didn't think that was possible, so this documentary is a great eye opener.
I love LA, but as an Aussie when I was there, I became quickly aware of the microscope some people put themselves under. Just make sure you don't get sucked into the Beverley Hills Rexisaurus Rex 'chew on ginger root for sustenance' diet... Trust me it exists and even though some girls joke about it, they're really not. Unfortunately the microscope in that city makes people do crazy things. Some get influenced to be skinny, get unnecessary surgeries and change their natural look altogether. I'm just one of those women that won't change. I find unnecessary surgeries a waste of time and - not to mention - squeemish. My boyfriend had corrective surgery on his nose a couple of months ago (as it was broken 6 years ago) and even then I was quite squeemish when the doctors would come to redress his bandages.
So I'm on about day 4 with very little to no sugar as well as incorporating more raw food into my diet, and I have to say I'm feeling pretty good (even though I do have the sugar craving headache). I'm cutting out gluten because it's been making me feel a bit yukky too. Mind you, I am sensitive to gluten and allergic to alcohol and peanuts. People are usually horrified by my alcohol allergy and say something like, "Gees that must suck. You must hate going out and partying with friends sober." Actually, I don't really care that I'm allergic to it because I can stay out longer and wake up in the morning without the hangover. The allergy is quite serious, so I've got to be very careful when I go out to restaurants. Thank goodness I'm smart and carry Phernergan with me at all times.
To end this week's blog, I thought a beautiful quote from the Dhammapada would be nice. Whenever I read this extract it makes me think about the way we think, as well as our actions (such as what we eat). I w
We are what we think.
All that we are arises with our thoughts.
With our thoughts we make the world.
Speak or act with an impure mind
And trouble will follow you
As the wheel follows the ox that draws the cart.
We are what we think.
All that we are arises with our thoughts.
With our thoughts we make the world.
Speak or act with a pure mind
And happiness will follow you
As your shadow, unshakable.
