Avalon Date Night

Episode 2: Date Night

Episode 2 is now online for your viewing pleasure. There was a fair bit cut – like most of the episodes, due to lots of great material and sadly not enough time – so I'm going to fill you in on what they were doing before walking into the Mill(f) Bar. The couples were actually out taking sunset selfies unknowingly next to each other (too busy on their iPhones instead of enjoying the sunset) out on the beautiful headland of Avalon. I actually posted my picture on Instagram while we shot the scene (#blessed). Justin and I (Sarah) then head to the Mill Bar while Julia tries to ignore Bryce’s sunset search on Instagram... #irrelevant

The couples bump into each other and settle into a long night at the Mill Bar. Justin and Bryce fight over who will pay for the really strong exotic local craft beer while Julia and Sarah discuss the artistic statement the wood panelling on the ceiling is trying to say… Is it a dialogue or is it too faux unintentional, too laissez-faire? Time to call Henry and Jasmine to liven up the place. It turns out that Henry pretty much lives at the Mill Bar and Jasmine was dying to get back to the Avalon air.

In the middle of their very nasty divorce it seems that social media is keeping them occupied… Henry’s professional Instagrammer girlfriend Nikki and Jasmine’s Tinder searching. What we didn't get to see is Bryce trying to find some validation by talking about his book about a Chernobyl fireman (Uri Bruziski) and the last 4 hours of his life as he dies from radiation poisoning. He’s stuck on page 648 and hasn’t even gotten to the fire yet but would love some feedback on it if he could just email a copy… The only problem is that his iPhone 7SS battery is worse than 6.

Down the other end of the bar Sarah and Julia wax lyrical about The Blanco Party and how perfect the colour white is… I mean, is it even a colour? The ladies then begin trawling through Tinder. I think the episodes could probably end up being 30 minutes long (each) if we added everything in. Funnily enough though, the feedback that I get most is about people wishing the episodes were longer. They are really funny and I totally get why everyone wants more but what's really great about these episodes are how Domain let us do our thing and they don't try to cut or bland us down like a lot of network TV stations do. I think that's what a lot of people don't understand about network TV because that is what really happens.

The only thing that I helped with in this episode was giving Felix a 101 tutorial on how Tinder works and I think he wrote a spectacular monologue for Jasmine that sums up my experience with it. Albeit dialled up a notch for comedic effect. I only saw a few dick pics really. Most of them were of men posing in gym bathrooms showing off their muscles after a workout - 'X'... Next!

Stayed tuned for Episode 3: I'm Still Cool, where Bryce goes deep in the juju to find himself and his spirit animal.
